Advancing Fishery Monitoring Technologies: Wageningen University & Research Hosts Computer Vision Hackathon

From July 7 to 11, 2025, Wageningen University & Research (WUR) will host a week-long, in-person Computer Vision Hackathon on the Wageningen campus. This collaborative event will bring together partners from the OptiFish and EveryFish projects, focusing on developing and refining cutting-edge onboard monitoring tools using computer vision.

Why This Matters

Effective fish detection, segmentation, species classification, and tracking are at the heart of sustainable fisheries management. By improving these technologies, we can help fishers streamline monitoring, meet regulatory standards more easily, and support healthier marine ecosystems. This hackathon is an opportunity to accelerate innovation through shared expertise and hands-on experimentation.

Key Hackathon Focus Areas

Participants will work together in diverse, interdisciplinary teams to address several key technical challenges:

  • Fish detection, segmentation, and species classification from images
  • Fish tracking and counting in video streams
  • Accurate fish length and weight estimation
  • Dataset curation and model training for real-world scenarios

By the end of the week, we aim to make meaningful progress on these challenges and identify practical paths forward for implementing these solutions in real-world fishing operations.

Hackathon Draft Programme

Monday

The week kicks off with a communal lunch and an introduction to the challenges, teams, and expected outcomes.

Tuesday & Wednesday

Hands-on work begins! Teams will dive into their chosen challenges. Mini workshops may be held to share insights and recent research developments.

Thursday

Challenge scoring and assessment of results.

Friday

A wrap-up session to discuss next steps for implementation, future collaborative efforts, and lessons learned, followed by a closing lunch.
